The Newfoundland is calm, patient, and exceptionally gentle with children — often described as a natural nanny dog. They are sociable with people and other animals and tend to be easygoing indoors despite their large size. Newfoundlands are trainable and respond well to positive methods, though their size means early obedience training is important. They enjoy water and moderate outdoor activity. Their heavy coat requires regular grooming and they are not suited to hot climates.
