The Great Pyrenees is a calm, confident dog with a strong protective instinct developed through centuries of livestock guarding. It is gentle and patient with family members, including children, but tends to be independent and may not respond to commands with the same eagerness as more biddable breeds. This breed is naturally nocturnal and can be vocal at night. It requires a securely fenced yard and an owner who understands its guardian temperament and independent nature.
